Here is the rundown on the recommended format for IGTV videos on Instagram and Instagram posts.
If you’re interested in posting a video under 15 minutes then you can use your mobile device. The maximum time for uploading on a mobile device is 15 minutes. Anything longer than that will have to be done on a computer.
For IGTV the format is a vertical video so your best bet is 1080x1920 pixels with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The video must also be in MP4 format.
There are also file size requirements when uploading a video on Instagram. If the video is 10 minutes or less the file size must be 650 MB or smaller. If the video is longer than 10 minutes or up to 60 minutes, the size of the file can't be larger than 3.6 GB. If you want to add a cover photo, the best format is 420px by 654px.
Another recommended size is 480 by 600px (shown above). It's always good to test a couple of different formats to see what works best for you.
If you're only interested in posting images on Instagram, there are a few file sizes Instagram recommends to get the best qualify photo on your feed.
1. 1080px by 1080px (square)
2. 1080px by1350 px (portrait)
3. 1080px by 608px (landscape)
The image below was created in Adobe Photoshop. The format for this digital painting is 6500 by 6500px. If you're creating artwork to sell and need to set a larger file size format, you can still post on Instagram using a larger file size. For example, Society6 recommends setting art at 6500 by 6500px if you want to sell your work. Instead of going through the trouble of creating different file sizes, you can still post high-quality images on Instagram not using the standard file size recommendation. It's always good to experiment to see what works best for you.
